Argaloth Down

February 7, 2011 in Raiding

Left-to-Right: Qat, Pheam, Teq, Lyn, Jert, Em, Kimdreg, Nodor, Nocht, Gil

Grats DF, our first Cata raid kill.  One down, many to go!  This is a great start, dps was good (Argaloth is a dps race), tanks managed to have enough health to not get instagibbed, and healers kept us alive!  It took us 3 attempts and Nodor was the only one of us who had seen this fight before.  Looking forward to actually having him drop some loot we can use!

Goblin Fishing Pole

January 26, 2011 in News, Raiding

I’ve got a few things lined up for the next couple of weeks in-guild that I’d like to spread knowledge of and encourage participation in:

Fishing Competition

In order to help us achieve That’s A Lot of Bait and obtain Seafood Magnifique Feast for raiding as soon as possible, I’ve scheduled a fishing competition this Thursday 27th at 7pm server. The plan is for us to fish up as many fish as we can in an hour, with monetary prizes awarded to the top three and a ‘special’ prize for the best dressed. As well as fishing our asses off, expect general vent hilarity and mocking of mages. To best put to use our efforts, all fish proceeds will go to the guild bank, with cata-level fish being particularly encouraged.

Please sign-up on the in-game calendar if you can attend, and direct any questions/comments/love to BF (i.e: “BF, thats a crap time, reschedule it”, “BF, I love you, be my fishing valentine”) .

Normal Dungeon Runs

As part of our plans to begin raiding in Cataclysm, we need a number of healers geared and confident that we currently do not have. To combat this, I’ve begun a campaign  to give some of our healers the normal dungeon experiences they require to start doing heroic guild runs.

This involves creating a list of those who would like these runs (not just healers, anyone is welcome) and a list of helpers (particularly tanks, but again, not only) who are willing to help them do so. I am aware that if someone asks for a run and people are available they will get lots of volunteers, which is why I’m trying to cater the list towards tanks who will help, as we have a smaller number of these available and at the moment a few tanks are doing all the helping. If you would like to be put on either side of this list, please contact me through whatever means and I will do so.

List link

I’ll make a more personal blog post soon. Remember to keep referring to the awesome post Teq made below this one on the front page for what you need to do to gear up!

2011

January 5, 2011 in News, Raiding

Hey everyone welcome to the new year!  I’m excited excited about 2011.  In January I’m hoping we can all start working toward getting started raiding.  We’re going to get some conversations going pretty soon but I thought I would give you a couple of “heads up” items so that you have a starting idea of what we’re looking toward.  According to our Working as a Team achievement we are pretty close to having someone in each of the professions maxed out (we probably have all of them except people haven’t hit honored yet).  Here are some things we should do  to get ready for raiding:

  • Figure out your primary spec and get a gearset that is average item level 341 or greater.
    • Gear from normal dungeons is item level 333 so you will need to pick up some heroic gear or buy some JP gear
    • If you’re a crafter you probably have an epic piece or two you can make.  Those will require Chaos Orbs from heroics.
    • Greens are a no-no for raids. Get that stuff upgraded, there are a lot of BoE blues and crafting blues if you can’t get it any other way.
    • Many reputations have access to 359 epic gear.
  • Until we get access to Seafood Magnifique Feast (which requires us to do a lot of fishing) you will need to make sure you have access to another food buff.  If you don’t fish/cook then you might want to find someone in the guild who’s happy to do a little extra to cover, or find out what you’re going to need to buy.
  • Keep doing dailies and we’ll get a nice little buff that we’ll be able to use while raiding.
  • Flasks are going to be important, and until we get cauldrons you’re going to need to need to fend for yourself a lot.
  • Gems and enchants are going to be important, so develop a rapport with your favorite guild enchanter/jewelcrafter.  (if you’re not familiar with the professions tab I suggest reading this article).
    • Head enchants require revered with one of the new factions, you need to get access to the appropriate faction.
    • Shoulder enchants are the domain of Therazane.  You need at least honored with them (just do the Deepholm quests).  Exalted totally optional (nice, yet small bonus).
  • Head over to Tankspot videos or your favorite place for raid videos and start getting familiar with the fights.  We’ll be hitting them all sooner or later, I would really like to not hear that people haven’t at least watched a video when we get to these fights.
  • We are almost to Guild Level 9 which gives us 20% less durability loss while raiding.  Keep questing and leveling and doing guild runs.
  • Get together with other people who are the same class as you and talk about skills, specs, and rotations a bit.  Either you’ll learn something or you teach something.  Either way we all win.
  • Keep an eye on the raiding forum (must be signed in to view).  Post what you know and listen to what you don’t.  Also feel encouraged to post in the Damage SpecialistsHealing, and Tankingforums.
  • You can go to your activity feed here, and click “Favorite” on this post, then when you want to come back to reference it it will show up in your favorites so that you can easily reference it later.

Raid Nights

September 14, 2010 in Raiding

Attention all raiders, we need you to go to this thread and post your availability so that we can re-evaluate the best night for raiding.  Please do so right away!  This is important, we’re trying to get to the point where we can work on Arthas and also hit Ruby Sanctum, and to do that we need to be working with you to make sure that we’re running on nights with maximum availability.

May 18, 2010 in News, Raiding

Teq is busy working on his healing gear, so he asked me to post something on the home page to keep things active and lively.  Today I’m going to talk about the Valithria Dreamwalker encounter.

Image shamelessly taken from wowwiki

It’s not immediately obvious from the picture here, but Valithria has a boo boo.  This is almost what you would call a reverse boss.  It’s an escort quest that never really goes anywhere.  If you’re thinking a dragon should be able to take care of herself, you’d be right.  In this case you need to heal her up to full health before she’ll be able to escape her bonds and fend for herself.  There’s no real boss here, just lots and lots of adds.

Healers

This fight was made just for you!  Oh boy are you going to be busy, there’s so much going on!  First off you’ll need to assign some roles for this fight.  In most cases there will be 3 healers, and for this fight it’s especially important.  One of the healers is going to be a dedicated healer on Valithria, one will float between raid healing and healing Valithria, and the third will focus primarily on raid healing.  All three healers will need to keep an eye out for Dream Portals.  Dream Portals will appear every 30 seconds and contain green orbs that you need to collect to get a stacking buff, this stacking buff boosts your healing and mana regeneration, so it is very important to hit every wave of portals or the stacking buff will drop off and you’ll likely fail the encounter.  Each portal will only accept one person, so the healers need to each enter a different portal.  A small green glowing dot appears on the ground before the portal spawns, so you will be able to position early.  You do all that right and you’ll win the day.

DPS

So many adds, so little time.

Assign 2 dps to handle Suppressors, one on the left, and one on the right.  Suppressors apply a debuff to Valithria that makes the healers job impossible.  The top priority of those 2 dpsers is to kill Suppressors.  The rest of the time they should be helping out on other adds.
Everyone need to kill Blazing Skeletons fast since they literally lay waste to the raid.
A ranged dps should be assigned to kiting zombies.  Hunters and frost magi work well for that sort of thing I’m told.
Ranged DPS should focus on Abominations.  You know the big fat guys.  Pew pew them.
Melee DPS should focus on Archmagi.  Stabbinate them.

Tanks

One goes left, one goes right.  Stand up, sit down, fight, fight, fight!  Each tank will take one side of the room.  Lots and lots of adds in this fight, I hope you like AoE tanking.  Stay away from the Zombies as they apply a stacking armor and nature damage debuff, if you must aggro them, try to kite, but a range dps should be kiting them if possible.  You’ll primarily be tanking Abominations, Archmagi, and Blazing Skeletons.

Archmagi have a frost volley that you should interrupt.  They also mark the floor where an ice column will appear.  The ice column knocks people around.  Can you fly? No, so it is a good thing to dodge.
The Abominations have a gut spray.  It’s quite icky, so point them away from the raid.  When they die they spawn little slimy worms, so prep your AoE threat for that.

The whole raid

Don’t stand in front of Abominations.  Unless you like slime and death.  In that case go for it.
Don’t stand on the ice column marks on the ground.  Unless you can fly.  In that case go for it.
Don’t stand in the mana voids.  Unless you don’t have mana.  In that case go for it.
Don’t get too far away from your healers, it’s easy in this room, but don’t do it.  Unless you are invincible.  In that case go for it.
The fight is on a soft-enrage timer, you start getting too many blazing skeletons to deal with and you die.

That’s all I’ve got.  Hopefully if you have any comments or corrections you’ll help out a murloc and post em for me.  Hope to talk to everyone soon!

Yer Pal,

Sherloc

The future of raiding

April 26, 2010 in News, Raiding

MMO-Champion posted a story this morning about raiding in Cataclysm. You should read it.  There are very big implications in it.
