The future of raiding

April 26, 2010 in News, Raiding

MMO-Champion posted a story this morning about raiding in Cataclysm. You should read it.  There are very big implications in it.

Go back and re-read that post.   Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Now read it one more time just to be sure you’ve got it all down.

Good, you understand now?  Do you?  10 and 25 man are now:

  • exclusive
  • the same difficulty/challenge
  • the same tier of gear

What does this mean for DF?  Well it means that by doing 10 man progression we are on par with the 25 man guilds.  It means that those of us who never liked or got into 25 man content are no longer left behind.  It means that we have more of a chance to shine than ever.

This is big.  It’s huge.  I’m very happy about this change.  I will be looking to all of our proto drakes for guidance on where we want to be come Cataclsym.  Expect there to be more discussion as summer progresses.

  1. This is defiantly going to be interesting. However this is going to pose a problem for members in R.A., does anybody have any thoughts on what might work for DF?

  2. I think that there is going to be enough QQ over this between the hardcore raiders and casuals that Blizz might back go and rethink part of it, the gear for example. I mean I see the joy of it, more so for us being on par with the 25′s, I just think folks will bitch enough that parts of this will change. RA will still be around, 25 mans will drop the same loot, just more.. that works for a lot of folks I suppose.

  3. I’m just happy at the possibility that I might actually get a legendary at some point in my wow career :<

  4. I think that this refinement is another example of Blizzard trying to appeal to the less-hardcore players. It works, but I’m sad to see it. I like the fact that there are better rewards for 25 than 10.

However, with that in mind, for guilds like us who use RA to achieve 25s, this may be beneficial. We may be able to get two teams running 10 instead. This may help us achieve more together as a guild, rather than together as a server. In that regard, I like the change.

I’m a little bothered by the achievement system changes, but understandably so, it makes sense. I don’t believe that they will do away with the current achievements, but perhaps maybe combine them into the same category, and hopefully, leave the points awarded the same.

As for the legendary item changes, that’s another attempt to keep players interested. I’ve been bothered by the cataclysm ahead since the day they announced it. Probably because I’m partial to old-wow, as I was a beta tester. But I’ve really noticed Blizzard making the game so much easier in the last year and a half. And it disappoints me greatly.

Some good points being made, worth reading.

History tells us that the future will be much like the past… this is a reminder from Rossi, that maybe, just maybe, this future will be very different – and to hold off until we know more. I never thought I would have 60K health in Wrath.

I also never thought we would be one of the top 10 man raiding guilds on the server.
What I think today, is not what may be – and for now, I think it might be a lot better for me to enjoy what is, and be optimistic that I will enjoy what will be.

  7. What’s always vexed me is the assumption that hardcore raiders deserve better gear. The idea that they are better players than casuals has always been ridiculous. In fact, the only times that I could guarantee that I would be grouped with someone who is absolutely clueless is when I was slotted for a 25 or 40 man raid.

Gear and skill have never been analogous in this game, (though it used to be a closer assumption in pvp) and they never will be.

Hardcore raiders like feeling special because everyone likes to feel special. Make everyone special, then nobody is special. Blizzard is getting desperate, because WoW is now more repetitive than it has ever been.

I say, revamp all of the classes from scratch, focus all balancing on pvp, and then rebuild the world to accomodate.

Maybe then it would bring back the level 60 magic.
